How to ride the Glenelg tram
Never been to Adelaide? Start here. Three ideas only: when it’s free, how to pay, and how to board.
Free or paid? (the simple version)
Think of the line as three pieces. You only need this picture — not every stop name.
- 1 City — free Hop around the CBD free (South Terrace through the city and North Terrace free zone)
- 2 Middle — pay Past South Terrace toward Glenelg you need a valid fare for the suburbs
- 3 Beach end — free Brighton Road ↔ Moseley Square / Jetty Road is free again

Example: free day
Rundle Mall → Victoria Square → North Terrace museums. Stay inside the city free zone — no fare.
Example: city to beach
CBD → Moseley Square. Free at both ends of the free zones; pay for the middle. Have payment ready before you leave the city free zone.
Example: beach hop only
Jetty Road shops ↔ Moseley Square beach. Free on the Glenelg free section if you don’t ride past Brighton Road toward the city.

Adelaide Metro supports more than one payment method. For most interstate or overseas visitors, start with the easiest option below — then follow the validators or app prompts on the day.
Tap and Pay
Visa or Mastercard contactless card, or a phone / smartwatch wallet, where Adelaide Metro accepts Tap and Pay on trams. One clean action at the reader — similar idea to contactless on other Australian cities.
metroCARD
Adelaide’s reusable card. Good if you stay longer or also use buses and trains. Buy / top up via official Adelaide Metro channels (retailers, machines, online where available).
Buy & Go app
Adelaide Metro’s app-based ticket option. Download from your app store and follow the in-app steps before you ride.
Pay and ride in 4 steps
- 1 Decide free or paid
City-only or Jetty Road-only hops can be free. City → beach (or beach → city through the suburbs) means have payment ready.
- 2 Get payment ready before the tram
Contactless card / phone (Tap and Pay), metroCARD, or Buy & Go — don’t leave it until the doors open.
- 3 Validate when you need a fare
Use the tram validators / readers as Adelaide Metro instructs (beep / success light). If you are fully inside a free zone for the whole hop, you don’t pay for that free section — but if your trip leaves the free zone, you need a valid fare.
- 4 Board, ride, get off
Check the destination sign, mind traffic on street-running stops, and alight at Jetty Road or Moseley Square for the beach.

City to beach, or beach to city
To Glenelg beach
Board in the city. Look for Moseley Square or Glenelg on the tram. Pay for the middle once you leave the city free zone. Free again near Jetty Road / the square.
To the city from Glenelg
Board at Moseley Square or Jetty Road. Citybound destinations vary (hospital, Entertainment Centre, Festival Plaza…). Read the sign. Same free / paid / free idea in reverse.
